Clara spun around, her concealed stiletto flicking outward to knock the pistol aside.
The shot grazed the stone mantle, shattering a porcelain vase into shards. In the moonlight, Keith moved with shocking ferocity, pinning both her wrists against the mahogany desk.
Their faces were inches apart. Her gilded mask remained firmly in place.
"My sister was a pampered noblewoman who fainted at the sight of a needle," Keith said with a dark chuckle. "You, on the other hand, fight like the King's finest assassin. Who sent you, little bird?"
Clara twisted her hips, sweeping Keith's legs out from under him. As they both hit the carpet, the castle bells began to toll frantically.
"Intruders in the courtyard! The Royal Inquisitor has arrived!"
